How to Beat Despair in Duskfade
Despair is the fifth and final of the five emotional bosses. It is the force preventing Zirian from rescuing his sister Allira — the wall at the top of the Clock Tower. Every mechanic you drilled across the other four fights comes together here. Here is what we know and how to approach it.
Despair — Overview
Despair is the fifth and final of the five emotional bosses. It appears at the top of the Clock Tower, the heart of Tearfeld and the place where Allira is held. Despair represents hopelessness — the crushing certainty that you will not reach the one you love in time.
Where the other bosses each weaponize one feeling, Despair combines them. Early read-throughs of the design suggest a multi-phase finale that cycles through the tricks of Wrath, Sorrow, Fear, and Jealousy — fury, grief, terror, and grasping loss — before its own hopelessness closes in. The fight is rated Very Hard. This is the test of everything.
What We Know So Far
Detailed phase-by-phase tactics for Despair are still being documented by the community as players reach the finale. Based on the game’s design and the bosses that precede it:
- Expect a multi-phase fight — each phase echoes a prior boss, so the time-freeze dodge, cage awareness, nerve, and contested-objective habits all matter in turn.
- The time-freeze dodge (roll into a swing at the last moment) remains your anchor through every phase. It is the one tool that works when the clock itself seems to stop.
- Do not burn your best combo early — pace yourself across phases. The finale punishes players who arrive at the last phase low on health and focus.
- Upgrade fully first. Spend every Upgrade Gear, collect all Clock Heart Pieces (3 = +1 health), and max time energy before climbing the tower. There is no turning back mid-fight.
This guide is being updated with phase-by-phase tactics as more players beat Despair in the full game. For now, see the Boss Guide for the complete five-boss summary and the Jealousy guide for the fight just before it.
General Boss Strategy (All Five)
- Master the time-freeze dodge first. A well-timed roll stops time briefly, giving you free hits on a frozen enemy.
- Short chains over long combos. Most bosses punish players who keep attacking after a safe opening ends.
- Use the environment. Hook-shot points and rails are not just traversal — they are part of several boss phases.
- Upgrade before you fight. Spend Upgrade Gears on Zirian and Cuckoo, and collect Clock Heart Pieces (3 = +1 health) before tough fights.
